We are Uman Sense
Our mission
Uman Sense is a MedTech innovation company, a spin-off from Lund University. We work to improve the lives of people through modern mobile solutions to medical challenges. With the patient in focus, we create innovative solutions at the intersection of medicine, mathematics, and mobile technology. We believe that our strategy creates new opportunities for healthcare to offer the best possible health care.
Stroke is often detected too late
Stroke is the most common cause of permanent disability in adults, and the second most common cause of death in the Western world. Today, people who suffer a stroke can be cured if they receive the right treatment in time. Unfortunately, most arrive too late. We hope to change that with Stroke Alarm.
The Stroke Alarm journey
The first thoughts of a mobile stroke alarm were born in 2014 out of the frustration of having an effective treatment for severe stroke, but not being able to offer it to the majority of stroke patients. This led Johan Wassélius, associate professor at Lund University and interventional neuroradiologist at Skåne University Hospital in Lund, to look for a way to make it possible for stroke patients to get help even when they are unable to call for it themselves.
The rapid development of wearable technology such as small, lightweight and energy efficient sensors available has enabled continuous detailed monitoring of the arm movement. Arm movement varies with everyday activities, making it sometimes challenging to distinguish normal variation in arm movement from unilateral arm paralysis. By applying machine learning and neural networks, we have developed an algorithm to distinguish stroke-affected arms from healthy ones even during everyday activities and during sleep.
In 2020, Stroke Alarm was CE-certified for patients with an elevated risk for stroke. Read more about the research and development behind Stroke Alarm.
